I think one of the points of In Summer is that for teenage boys, being “cool” means being stupid. Treating girls badly, sending mixed messages, affecting a pose, driving a sporty car—these are all dumb things that teenagers do to attract attention and emulate the media’s models of coolness. Of course, it’s a ridiculous way to live, and most young men grow out of it.
